Day 2 on one of Brazil’s best beaches

Arriving late yesterday evening in a very sleepy beachside village called Praia de Frances we were helped out by a resident South African woman and her son who out of the sheer goodness of their hearts took us under their wings and led us to a local pousada (guest house) to negotiate a local’s rate for us rather than a hiked-up gringo one. We woke up this morning and made a bee-line for the beach, apparently one of the best five in Brazil. Wow. Greeted with a bright turquoise ocean as far as the eye could see (apparently the Atlantic but this one surely can’t be the same as the water in the Algarve!) and stunning white sand, we set ourselves up for the day ordering fresh coconut milk (served of course in coconut shell), a fruity pineapple drink (again in pineapple), a plate of prawns and a hot corn on the cob (I would never have pictured myself eating a corn on the cob on a beach but hey!)

Having spent most of the day sunning ourselves we decided to rent a surf board and see if the Brazilian waves were any more forgiving than the Peruvian ones. Unfortunately not, it seems neither of us are natural surfers! Not that this sounds plausible but we both thought the waves looked pretty rough, either than or we’re just sore losers... Anyway having returned to our pousada we’re planning on a bite to eat then early night as there’s another picture-perfect beach 10km down the coast that we’re heading to tomorrow.
